Osprey

Osprey, sometimes called Sea Hawks, are their own evolutionary branch of raptor. Found worldwide, this bird specializes in catching fish and is rarely found far from water. Luckily, New Jersey has miles of coasts, rivers, and lakes for the Osprey. Osprey, similar to Owls, have an opposable digit that helps them rotate their piscine catch while they are flying to make it face forward and become more aerodynamic. Similar to the Peregrine Falcon and the Bald Eagle, the Osprey population plummeted due to DDT in North America, but has rebounded thanks to conservation efforts.
